For this modern farmhouse estate, the primary design objective was to create a seamless, high-functioning transition from the indoor living areas out into the landscape. The homeowners wanted to elevate their outdoor living experience by replacing a standard exit with an expansive, multi-tiered destination deck that acts as a natural extension of the home’s interior footprint.
By utilizing crisp architectural lines and matching the deep bronze trim of the house, the new deck structures feel intentionally integrated rather than added on. A dedicated timber pergola defines an intimate, semi-private spa area and lounge alcove to the left, while the main deck opens completely to the sky, offering an inviting space for dining and relaxation. Wide, cascading steps gently anchor the entire structure to the manicured lawn, creating an effortless physical flow that draws family and guests naturally from the house down into the open outdoor space.
To achieve a comprehensive night-lighting plan, the wrapping L-shaped staircase presented a distinct geometric challenge: standard mitered tread joints offer zero structural clearance to house a light fixture precisely at the corner pivot.
To resolve this without sacrificing the continuous rhythm of the steps, we custom-engineered a blunt-nosed keystone corner. This custom-fabricated module provides the structural depth required to recess a flush LED fixture directly into the junction, transforming a complex technical constraint into an intentional architectural detail. The resulting design provides uniform, glare-free illumination across the cascading stairs, creating an elegant, highly visible transition at the deck's primary directional pivot.
